What Is a Vape Replacement Coil?

A replacement coil is the removable heating part inside a vape tank or refillable pod cartridge. You may also see it called a coil head or atomizer head. It holds a heating element wrapped in wick material that draws in e-liquid. When the device sends power, the coil heats the soaked wick and makes vapor.

With regular use, the heating surface and the wick slowly wear down. As they do, flavor may get weaker and you may get less vapor. The coil may also start to taste burnt. A new coil lets you keep using the same tank or cartridge.

How to Find the Correct Replacement Coil

Replacement coils are not universal. One maker may offer several coil families. Those families may not swap with each other, even when the coils look almost the same.

1. Confirm the device or tank: Check the model name printed on it, on the box or in the manual.
2. Identify the coil family: Look for the exact series, such as GTX, PnP, RPM, Z Series or another brand’s own series.
3. Review compatibility: See which devices and tanks each product page lists as a match.
4. Select the resistance: Choose one of the options your device maker says it supports.
5. Check the wattage range: Make sure your device can run within the range printed on the coil.

Types of Replacement Vape Coils

Replacement Tank Coils

Follow the maker’s steps when you remove a used coil. You need to empty some tanks first. Others have a design that lets you change the coil with less e-liquid loss.

Pod System Coils

Some refillable pod devices use reusable cartridges that take separate pod system coils. With this design, you keep the cartridge and only swap out the worn coil.

Other pod devices use cartridges with fixed, built-in coils. With those, you replace the whole pod when the coil wears out. Check your device specs before you decide if you need a coil head or a replacement cartridge.

Mesh Replacement Coils

Mesh replacement coils use a mesh heating surface instead of a classic round wire. The wider surface can heat the wick more evenly. That is why mesh is common in modern tank and pod coils.

A mesh build does not mean a coil fits every device. You still need to match the exact coil family, size, connection, resistance and wattage to your tank or device.

Sub-Ohm Coils

Sub-ohm coils have a resistance below 1.0 ohm. Many suit devices that support higher power and more open airflow. Still, how they perform varies a lot from one coil family to the next.

Do not pick a coil just because its label says sub-ohm. Make sure your device supports that resistance. Always stay within the wattage range the maker lists.

MTL Vape Coils

MTL vape coils usually suit lower power and a tighter mouth-to-lung draw. You can often find them for compact tanks and refillable pod systems. The final draw also depends on the device’s airflow and cartridge design.

Resistance alone does not decide how a coil will perform. Compare the full specs. Then choose only an option your device supports.

Understanding Resistance and Wattage

You measure coil resistance in ohms. Within one coil family, each resistance may have its own wattage range. Each may also give a different level of warmth, airflow and vapor.

• Higher-resistance options: Often run at lower wattages and may give a tighter, cooler draw.
• Mid-range options: Often balance warmth, airflow, flavor and power use.
• Lower-resistance options: Often support higher wattages and a warmer, more open draw.

These are general traits, not rules for every coil. The coil maker’s specs always come first, over any guess based on resistance.

When Should You Replace a Vape Coil?

Coil life varies with use, power settings, e-liquid makeup and how well the wick stays soaked. It may be time for a new coil when you notice:

• A burnt or bad taste that lasts
• Flavor that stays weak or tastes off
• Less vapor at your usual power setting
• Gurgling, flooding or leaking that keeps going
• E-liquid that turns unusually dark in the tank
• Damage or wear you can see around the coil

Not every problem means the coil has failed. Before you replace it, check a few things. Make sure the tank has enough e-liquid and the coil sits firmly in place. Also check that the device runs within the suggested wattage range.

How to Prime a New Coil

Priming gives the new wick time to soak up e-liquid before the coil heats it. Powering a dry or half-soaked coil can damage the wick. It can also cause a burnt taste right away.

1. Install the new coil by following the maker’s instructions.
2. Fill the tank or pod with a suitable e-liquid.
3. Let the wick soak for as long as the maker suggests.
4. Start near the low end of the coil’s listed wattage range.
5. Raise the power slowly, and stay within that range.

• Leave time between draws so the wick can soak up more e-liquid.
