Castle Long Reserve by Five Pawns takes the signature Castle Long flavor profile and puts it through a carefully controlled barrel-aging process inspired by techniques traditionally used for wine and spirits. Rather than simply allowing the e-liquid to sit or “steep” in a bottle, Five Pawns ages Castle Long Reserve in American oak barrels to allow the blend to interact with the wood as it matures.
The foundation of Castle Long combines notes of Kentucky bourbon, toasted coconut, roasted almond, brown sugar, Madagascar vanilla bean, and French vanilla. During barrel aging, the goal is not to completely change that profile, but to allow it to mellow while developing additional character from the oak.

What Does Barrel-Aged E-Liquid Mean?
Barrel aging is a controlled maturation process in which a finished blend is stored inside a wooden barrel for a specific period of time. Five Pawns developed its own approach to adapting this traditional technique to e-liquid, where the amount of time in the barrel and the type of wood used can influence how the finished flavor develops.
According to Five Pawns, four factors are especially important during the process: time, barrel type, air, and temperature. Each has to be controlled carefully because e-liquid behaves differently from wine or distilled spirits.
Why Five Pawns Uses American Oak
Five Pawns uses American oak barrels for Castle Long Reserve. The company specifically chose American oak for the flavor characteristics it can contribute to the blend, including complementary cream, vanilla, coconut, and oak notes that naturally fit the existing Castle Long profile.
The barrels are non-charred. Five Pawns explains that its objective is to develop the oak character of Castle Long rather than introduce the smoky qualities associated with heavily charred barrels used for some spirits.
How Long Is Castle Long Reserve Barrel Aged?
Castle Long Reserve is aged in American oak barrels for approximately three weeks. Five Pawns says this aging period was selected after extensive testing and provides the right amount of time for Castle Long to absorb oak character, mellow, and develop the qualities associated with the Reserve edition.
The aging period is deliberately limited. Because vegetable glycerin and other components of e-liquid do not behave exactly like distilled spirits, leaving the blend in wood indefinitely would not necessarily improve it. Five Pawns has stated that it prefers to remove the liquid from the barrel and transfer it into inert glass within 30 days.
The Castle Long Reserve Steeping and Aging Process
Before filling, the oak barrels are properly tightened and prepared. Once filled with Castle Long, they are stored in a dark, cool environment while the blend matures.
During those three weeks, the liquid remains in contact with the American oak while the individual flavor components continue to integrate. Five Pawns describes the result as Castle Long picking up oak character while becoming more mellow.
When the aging period is complete, Five Pawns extracts a sample from the barrel and tests it on a fresh coil. Once the batch is considered properly aged, the barrels are returned to the Five Pawns production facility. The finished Castle Long Reserve is then double filtered and bottled.
Barrel Aging vs. Traditional E-Liquid Steeping
Traditional e-liquid steeping generally refers to allowing a blended e-liquid to rest so its individual flavor components have time to integrate and mature. Castle Long Reserve goes further by carrying out that maturation inside an American oak barrel.
That distinction is important. The Reserve process does not simply give Castle Long additional resting time; it introduces direct interaction between the e-liquid and the oak. This is what gives the Reserve series its additional oak-influenced character while retaining the recognizable Castle Long foundation.

The Reserve series is built around the same complex flavor foundation that made Castle Long one of Five Pawns’ signature blends, but the barrel-aging process adds another layer to the experience. The process is also considerably more involved than producing a standard e-liquid. Each batch must spend weeks in prepared oak barrels, be stored under controlled conditions, tested after aging, and then double filtered before it is ready for bottling.
