How to pick a box mod kit

Decide how you want to power it, since the best box mod kits here come in two battery styles. A dual 18650 box mod reaches the most power, and you can swap in fresh cells when the first pair runs low. The batteries are sold separately, though, so add them to your budget. A kit with a built-in battery, like the Aegis Solo 3 or the ARMOUR ULTRA, is simpler, since you just plug it in.

Don’t pay for power you won’t use, either. Most stock coils here top out at 80W or less, so even a 100W kit has room to spare. The extra power of a 200W mod mostly matters if you move on to rebuildable atomizers. New to vaping? A box mod may be more than you need, so start with one of our vape starter kits instead.

Your e-liquid should match the kit too. Sub-ohm coils like these are made for high-VG, low-nicotine freebase e-liquid, while strong nic salts suit a pod kit. Our PG and VG guide and our freebase vs salt nicotine guide explain the difference.

Temperature control is more of a bonus. Most of these kits have a TC mode, but it only works with nickel, titanium or stainless steel coils. That makes it most useful for people who build their own.

Then there’s tank size. Every kit here comes with a sub-ohm tank, but they hold anywhere from 4mL to 6mL. If you hate refilling, pick a bigger one. It’s worth checking what spare coils cost too, since you’ll keep buying them.

What replacement coils cost

Every kit on this list uses replacement coils that you swap when the flavor fades or tastes burnt. Here’s what they cost at our store:

  • GeekVape L200 and Aegis Solo 3: Mesh Z coils cost $14.99 for 5.
  • VOOPOO Drag 5: PnP-X coils cost $15.99 for 5, in seven resistances from 0.15 to 1.0 ohm.
  • Lost Vape Centaurus N200: UB Max coils cost $12.99 for 3, and right now the 0.2 ohm X2 is the one in stock.
  • SMOK X-PRIV PLUS: D coils cost $13.99 for 5.
  • Vaporesso ARMOUR ULTRA: GTi coils cost $14.99 or $15.99 for 5.
  • dotMod dotBox 220W V2: dotCoils cost $15.99 for 5.

Box mod kit FAQ

What is the best box mod kit?

Based on our sales over the last six months, the GeekVape L200 is the best box mod kit on our list. For the newest kit, try the GeekVape Aegis Solo 3, which has a 3000mAh built-in battery.

Do box mod kits come with batteries?

Only kits with a built-in battery do, like the Aegis Solo 3 and the ARMOUR ULTRA. Every dual 18650 box mod here needs two batteries, sold separately.

Is a box mod better than a pod kit?

It depends on how you vape. A box mod has more power and a sub-ohm tank, so it makes bigger clouds with low-nicotine e-liquid. A pod kit is smaller and simpler, though, and it suits nic salts.

What wattage should I use?

Start at the low end of your coil’s range, then turn it up slowly. Each coil pack lists its watt range.

How often should you replace a coil?

Replace it when the flavor fades or tastes burnt. How long that takes depends on your e-liquid and how much you vape.

Do you need to be 21 to buy a box mod kit?

Yes. Under the federal Tobacco 21 law, you must be 21 or older to buy vape products in the US. Some states also limit what can ship there.

Ready for more power?

Pick a kit, and add a pack of replacement coils so you always have a fresh one.
