What Is Sub-Ohm Vaping? Tanks, Coils and Wattage Explained

Sub-ohm vaping means vaping with a coil rated below 1.0 ohm. A lower-resistance coil can run at higher wattage, so it heats more e-liquid at once and makes bigger, warmer clouds. Most people use it for direct lung vaping, where you inhale the vapor straight into your lungs in one breath. To start, you need a sub-ohm tank with a sub-ohm coil, or a box mod kit that has a mod and tank in one box. What is sub-ohm vaping?

First, every coil has a resistance, measured in ohms. A coil rated below 1.0 ohm is a sub-ohm coil, while one rated 1.0 ohm or higher is a regular coil. In fact, most sub-ohm coils today sit between 0.15 and 0.6 ohms.

In short, lower resistance lets a coil take more power without burning out. So a sub-ohm coil can run at 50W, 70W or more, while a pod coil often runs at 10W to 25W. Therefore, more power heats more e-liquid at once, which means thicker clouds and a warmer hit.

Sub-ohm coils also have larger airflow. As a result, they suit direct lung vaping, also called DTL. In other words, you breathe the vapor straight in, like a deep breath of air. In contrast, mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping is a tighter draw that you hold in your mouth first.

Here is how sub-ohm vaping compares with the tighter MTL style that most pod kits use.

Of course, neither style is better for everyone. Instead, it comes down to the draw you like and how much e-liquid you want to go through.

What you need for sub-ohm vaping

1. A mod with enough power. A box mod kit gives you the most power and battery life, so see our box mods. Some pod mods can also fire sub-ohm coils.
2. A sub-ohm tank. It holds the e-liquid and the coil, and its wide airflow is made for direct lung vaping. Also, most kits include one, or you can browse our tank collection.
3. Sub-ohm coils. Coils wear out, so keep a pack of replacement coils that fit your tank.
4. High-VG e-liquid. Generally, thick 70/30 or higher VG freebase juice works best, as the next section explains.
5. Batteries, if your mod needs them. However, many box mods use 18650 batteries that aren’t included, so check the specs before you buy.

The best e-liquid for sub-ohm vaping

First, pick a high VG ratio. A 70/30, 75/25 or 80/20 juice is thick, so it wicks well in large sub-ohm coils and makes dense clouds. On the other hand, thin 50/50 juice can flood a big coil or leak. Coil wattage guide

In general, each sub-ohm coil has a wattage range printed on it or on its box. So always stay inside that range. For instance, here are real examples from coils in kits we sell:

As a rule of thumb, lower resistance needs more watts. However, start at the low end of the range and turn it up a little at a time. Also, prime a new coil before the first puff. Just drip a few drops of e-liquid into the cotton, fill the tank and wait a few minutes so the cotton soaks through. That way, you avoid a burnt dry hit.

Battery safety tips

Because a sub-ohm coil pulls more power from the battery than a pod coil does, battery care matters. So here are the main tips from the FDA’s guide to avoiding vape battery fires:

• Read and follow your device maker’s instructions.
• Only use the batteries recommended for your device, and don’t mix brands, charge levels, or old and new batteries.
• Charge on a clean, flat surface where you can see it, away from anything that can burn.
• Keep your vape out of extreme heat, such as direct sun in a car.

Also, check your mod’s resistance range. For example, the Aegis Legend 5 supports 0.1 to 2 ohms, so don’t use a coil below that. Finally, carry spare batteries in a plastic case, never loose in a pocket with keys or coins.

Cons:

• It uses e-liquid fast, so you’ll buy bigger bottles more often.
• Batteries drain quicker than in a pod kit.
• A box mod kit is bigger and heavier than most pod systems.
• You need low-nicotine freebase juice, so nic salts are out.

If you want a small device and a tight draw instead, a pod kit with nic salts may suit you better.
