SMOK coil compatibility graphic: tanks such as the TFV12 Prince and TFV18 and pods such as the Nord 5 and Nord 6, each matched to its coil series, then pick by resistance and wattage

SMOK Coil Compatibility: Which Coils Fit Your Tank or Kit

SMOK coil compatibility comes down to the coil series. Each SMOK tank or pod takes one or two series, such as V12 Prince or RPM, and some series fit several devices. So this guide matches SMOK tank coils and SMOK pod coils to the devices they fit, using SMOK’s own compatibility chart. It also covers SMOK coil resistance and SMOK coil wattage, so you can pick the right version.

The short version

  • First, find the series name on your coil box, such as V12 Prince, V8 Baby, Nord or RPM. Then match it to your device in the charts below.
  • Also, some series fit more than one tank. For example, V8 Baby coils fit the TFV8 Baby, TFV8 Big Baby, TFV12 Baby Prince, TFV9 and TFV9 Mini.
  • RPM, RPM 2, RPM 3, RPM 4 and LP2 coils have similar names, but they don’t swap. In fact, many pod kits take two kinds of pod, each for a different series.
  • Next, pick a SMOK coil by its resistance within that series. Low-ohm coils need more power for big clouds, while the coils SMOK marks MTL give a tighter draw at low power.
  • Finally, prime every new coil and let it soak for a few minutes before your first puff.

SMOK coil compatibility chart for tanks

SMOK tank coils screw into the base of the tank. Most tanks take just one series, but a few series cross over. So here are the tanks that share a coil series. A check means SMOK’s compatibility chart lists that coil for the tank, while a blank means it doesn’t. We’ve also linked each coil and tank we stock:

TFV9 and TFV9 Mini✓✓
TFV16✓✓
TFV18✓✓

SMOK also lists V8 Baby and V9 coils for its Scar-18, Scar-Mini, Rigel and Rigel Mini kits. Likewise, SMOK lists TFV16 and TFV18 coils for its Mag P3, Morph 2 and ARCfox kits. However, check the TFV16 conical mesh first. SMOK’s chart groups it with the other TFV16 coils, but the TFV18’s own coil list leaves it out.

Tanks that take one coil series

In contrast, each of these tanks takes its own series of SMOK tank coils. We stock coils for all of them, too:

TFV18 Mini, plus the Fortis and R-Kiss 2 kitsV18 Mini coils
T-Air, plus the MAG Solo kitTA coils
TF-D Subtank, plus the X-Priv Plus and X-Priv Solo kitsD coils (D-COIL)

Watch the names, though. The TFV12 Prince takes V12 Prince coils, but the TFV12 Baby Prince takes V8 Baby coils. Meanwhile, the original TFV12 takes V12 coils, and we stock the V12-T14. So check the full tank name before you order.

SMOK coil compatibility chart for pod kits

SMOK pod coils push into the bottom of a pod. However, many SMOK pod kits take two kinds of pod, and each pod takes a different coil series. So check which pod you have, too. Here, too, a check means SMOK lists that coil for the kit, and we’ve linked the coils and kits we stock:

In other words, Nord coils fit the original Nord line, as well as the Nord pods of kits like the Nord 2 and RPM40. However, they don’t fit the newer Nord 4, Nord X, Nord 5, Nord GT or Nord 6, which take RPM-series coils instead.

We also stock pods for many of these kits: RPM40 (Standard and Nord), Nord X, Thallo, IPX80, RPM 4, RPM C and Nord 5 pods. Our Mag Pod pods take RPM coils, too. RPM 2 coils are out of stock right now, though. So for a two-pod kit such as the Nord X or Thallo, use the RPM pod and RPM coils until they’re back. The RPM C, however, takes only RPM 2 coils.

Pod kits with their own coil series

These kits take a series of SMOK pod coils that isn’t in the chart above:

SMOK kitCoil series
Nord 6, top-fill podRPM 4 coils
Tech247M coils
RPM160, standard podRPM160 coils

Watch the names here, too. RPM 4 coils fit the Nord 6’s top-fill pod, while the RPM 4 kit’s own pods take RPM or LP2 coils. Meanwhile, the Nord 6’s other pod, the 0.4Ω dual mesh, has its coil built in. Our Nord 6 review covers both pods, and we also stock Nord 6 pods in each style. Likewise, SMOK’s Novo pods have the coil built in, so you replace the whole pod.

Pick your SMOK coil by resistance and wattage

Within each series, SMOK coil resistance sets how the coil vapes. It’s measured in ohms (Ω). A low number, such as 0.15Ω, needs more power and makes bigger clouds. A higher number, on the other hand, runs at lower power. SMOK also puts MTL (mouth to lung) in the names of its tighter coils, such as the Nord DC 0.8Ω MTL or even the RPM MTL Mesh 0.3Ω.

SMOK coil wattage by series

SMOK’s compatibility chart doesn’t list power, so these ratings come from SMOK’s other pages, its coil boxes and the coils themselves. Each coil’s page then breaks them down by version:

Coil seriesCoil resistance and SMOK’s rating
V12 Prince0.15Ω to 0.4Ω, 30W to 130W
V8 Baby0.15Ω to 0.6Ω, 20W to 110W
V80.12Ω to 0.2Ω, 50W to 260W
TFV160.12Ω to 0.2Ω, up to 160W
TFV180.15Ω or 0.33Ω, 80W to 140W
V18 Mini0.15Ω to 0.33Ω, 40W to 140W
TFV16 Lite0.15Ω or 0.2Ω, best at 60W to 90W
V90.15Ω, 40W to 90W
RPM1600.15Ω, up to 90W
TA0.15Ω to 0.4Ω, 20W to 70W
D-COIL0.15Ω to 0.4Ω, 25W to 65W
RPM 30.15Ω or 0.23Ω, 20W to 80W
RPM 40.15Ω or 0.6Ω, 30W to 60W for the 0.15Ω
LP20.23Ω to 0.6Ω, 15W to 45W
RPM0.3Ω to 1.2Ω, 10W to 25W
Nord0.6Ω to 1.4Ω, up to 20W
M0.4Ω to 0.8Ω, 11W to 22W

At our store, for example, the Q4 0.4Ω makes up about 1 in 3 V12 Prince coil packs we’ve sold. Among RPM coils, meanwhile, about half of our packs are the Mesh 0.4Ω. Still, the right SMOK coil resistance depends on how you vape. Also, where SMOK skips a version, such as the V8 Baby M2 or the Nord 0.6Ω mesh, start at low power and work up.

Check the coil and your e-liquid

Not sure which version you have? Then check the coil itself, because SMOK prints the version and recommended wattage on many of its coils. Your e-liquid matters, too. For example, SMOK says its low-resistance RPM 3 coils suit freebase e-liquid and DL vaping. Meanwhile, our freebase vs salt nicotine guide explains which coils suit nic salt, and our sub-ohm vaping guide shows how tanks, coils and power work together.

How to prime and change a SMOK coil

A new coil needs to soak before you fire it. Otherwise, as SMOK warns, the dry cotton can burn. So whichever coil SMOK’s chart lists for your kit, prime it first. These steps come from SMOK’s own priming guide and kit manuals:

  1. Swap the coil. On a tank, first unscrew the base, then pull out the old coil and fit the new one. In a pod, pull the old coil out and press the new one in until it sits securely.
  2. Wet the cotton. For most coils, SMOK suggests a few drops of e-liquid in the holes on the coil’s side, as well as a drop or two in the center. For MTL coils, however, it says you can skip this step.
  3. Fill and pull. Fill the tank or pod. Then take a few puffs without pressing the fire button, which helps draw e-liquid into the cotton.
  4. Wait. SMOK’s manuals range from 2 to 3 minutes for pod kits to 15 minutes for a new tank coil. Its priming guide, however, suggests 5 to 10 minutes.
  5. Start low. Set your mod near the low end of the SMOK coil wattage range, then take a few short puffs. After that, work up to your usual setting.

From then on, refill before the e-liquid runs out, since SMOK says a dry tank can burn the coil. When it’s time for a new one, throw the old coil away as your local rules require. Also, if your SMOK mod runs on 18650 batteries, follow the FDA’s tips to help avoid vape battery fires.

The SMOK coils we stock

These are our six best-selling SMOK coil series in stock, plus RPM 3 coils for the newer Nord 5 and Nord GT. Each card also names the tanks or kits SMOK lists for that coil. Ratings are SMOK’s, and each pack’s page also lists every version.

SMOK tank coils

SMOK TFV8 Baby Coils

SMOK’s V8 Baby coils fit five tanks: the TFV8 Baby, TFV8 Big Baby, TFV12 Baby Prince, TFV9 and TFV9 Mini. So one pack can serve more than one tank.

Best for: anyone with a TFV8 Baby, Big Baby or TFV9 who wants one coil for all.

Good to know: SMOK gives no wattage for the two M2 coils, so start low with those.

TFV16 Conical Mesh box, powered by nexMesh, with loose conical mesh coils

0.12Ω to 0.2Ω Up to 160W Pack of 3

SMOK TFV16 Coils

These mesh coils fit the TFV16 tank. SMOK’s chart also lists them for the TFV18 tank, so they’re a second choice there.

Best for: high-power cloud chasers with a TFV16 or a TFV18.

Good to know: The TFV18’s own coil list leaves out the conical mesh, so check before using it there.

SMOK RPM Coils

SMOK lists them for the RPM pods of more than 20 kits, such as the RPM40, RPM80, Nord 4, Nord X, Thallo, IPX80 and RPM 4.

Best for: pod mod owners who want a series that works across many SMOK kits.

Good to know: They won’t fit an RPM 2 pod, even in kits that take both.

RPM 3 Meshed 0.15Ω and 0.23Ω boxes, with coils printed 40-80W and 20-45W

0.15Ω or 0.23Ω 20W to 80W Pack of 5

SMOK RPM 3 Coils

These mesh coils fit the Nord 5 and Nord GT, as well as the RPM 5 and RPM 5 Pro. SMOK also prints the rating on each one: 40W to 80W for the 0.15Ω and 20W to 45W for the 0.23Ω.

Best for: Nord 5 and Nord GT owners who want big clouds.

Good to know: SMOK says they suit freebase e-liquid and DL vaping, so they aren’t a tight MTL coil.

We also stock V9, V12, V8, TFV16 Lite, V18 Mini, TA, D, RPM160, M, RPM 4 and LP2 coils. So we stock every series in our SMOK coil compatibility charts, except RPM 2. You can also browse every replacement coil we carry by brand.

SMOK coil compatibility FAQ

Are all SMOK coils interchangeable?

No. Each SMOK tank and pod takes its own coil series. A few series cross over, though. For example, V8 Baby coils fit five tanks, and SMOK lists TFV16 and TFV18 coils for both of those tanks.

Do TFV8 Baby coils fit the TFV12 Prince?

No. The TFV12 Prince takes V12 Prince coils. Instead, TFV8 Baby coils fit the smaller TFV12 Baby Prince, along with the TFV8 Baby, TFV8 Big Baby, TFV9 and TFV9 Mini.

Do RPM coils fit RPM 2 pods?

No. RPM and RPM 2 coils don’t swap. Kits such as the Nord X and Thallo take one pod for each series, so use the pod that matches your coil.

Which coils fit the Nord 5 and Nord GT?

Both take RPM 3 coils in 0.15Ω or 0.23Ω. The SMOK coil wattage is 40W to 80W for the 0.15Ω, while the 0.23Ω takes 20W to 45W.

Which coils fit the Nord 6?

The Nord 6’s top-fill pod takes RPM 4 coils, in 0.15Ω or 0.6Ω. Its side-fill 0.4Ω pod has a built-in coil, so you replace the whole pod instead.

What SMOK coil resistance should I pick?

It depends on how you vape. A low SMOK coil resistance, such as 0.15Ω, needs more power for big clouds. For a tighter draw at low power, pick a coil SMOK marks MTL, such as the Nord DC 0.8Ω MTL.

How long should a new SMOK coil soak?

At least a few minutes. SMOK’s manuals range from 2 to 3 minutes for pod kits to 15 minutes for a new tank coil, while its priming guide suggests 5 to 10.
