Sub Ohm Tanks are built for direct-lung vaping, with big clouds and bold flavor. They use low-resistance coils and run at a higher wattage than mouth-to-lung tanks, so they pair with a box mod or a stronger pod mod.

What are Sub Ohm Tanks?

A sub ohm tank uses coils with a resistance below 1.0 ohm, which is where the name comes from. Most sub-ohm coils sit between 0.1 and 0.5 ohms. The lower resistance lets more power flow through the coil, so it runs at a higher wattage and makes more vapor than a mouth-to-lung (MTL) tank. Our guide to sub-ohm vaping covers the basics.

How Do Sub Ohm Tanks Work?

When you fire your mod, the coil heats up and turns the e-liquid in its wick into vapor. Wide airflow slots let in plenty of air, so you can take a long, open draw straight into the lungs. That’s direct-to-lung (DTL) vaping, while MTL vaping uses a tighter draw, a bit like a cigarette.

Power, airflow and coil resistance work together. Each coil has a recommended wattage range, printed on the coil or its box, and staying inside it helps the coil last.

Benefits of Sub Ohm Tanks

Here’s what sub ohm tanks do well:

  1. Big clouds: Low-resistance coils handle more power, so each puff makes more vapor.
  2. Bold flavor: More vapor per puff also carries more of the e-liquid’s flavor.
  3. Adjustable airflow: Most tanks let you open or close the airflow, so you can set a looser or tighter draw.
  4. Swappable coils: Many tanks take several coils from the same series, so you can change the feel without buying a new tank.
  5. Made for lower nicotine: Sub-ohm tanks suit high-VG freebase e-liquid in 3mg or 6mg, rather than strong nic salts. Our PG and VG guide explains why.

How to Choose the Right Sub Ohm Tank

Before you pick a tank, check these points:

  1. Coil Compatibility: Each tank takes certain coils, so check which ones fit and how easy they are to find. Sub-ohm coils also wear out faster than higher-resistance coils.
  2. Airflow Control: An adjustable airflow ring lets you set the draw you like.
  3. Tank Capacity: Most sub-ohm tanks hold 2ml to 5ml. A bigger tank means fewer refills, though it also makes the device taller.
  4. Build Quality: Look for stainless steel and sturdy glass that can handle daily use.
  5. Ease of Refilling: Top-fill tanks are easier and less messy to refill.
  6. Mod Fit: Make sure your mod can reach the tank’s wattage range.

Note: We stock tanks from brands like SMOKtech, Geekvape, Freemax and dotmod.
